AW Holds season ending celebration

Following the Winter Sports awards assembly at the high school, players, parents, siblings, and friends adjourned to Shawn's Irish tavern.  Refreshments were served along with some great food.  The following awards were given:

Top Defensive Player of the Year: Sam Spencer
Top Offensive Player of the Year: Cal Johnson
Most Improved: Cody Bowman
Most Valuable Player: Chris Podbielniak

The Power Players held elections for the following year:

President: Dave Trautlein
Vice President: Nichole Raimonde
Secretary: Lori Breese (returning)
Treasurer: Kris Zielinski (returning)



AW bows out of State Playoffs with a 5-1 loss to Bowling Green

The Generals jumped out to 1-0 lead on a shot from the blue line by Austin Pennell, but BG scored 5 unanswered goals to move on in the State playoffs.  This ends the 2012-2013 season for the Generals.  Thanks go out to everyone who made this a fun and successful  season.  The team will be recognized at the annual Winter Sports Awards at AW High School on March 12.

AW Loses heartbreaker to Maumee in closing minutes of the White Division Playoff
After falling behind 4-1, the Generals stormed back with a short-handed goal by Chris Miller  to tie the game at 4-4 with less than 5 minutes to play in the 3rd period.  Maumee scored their 5th goal on a power play to seal the victory.  Brandon Zielinski and Chris Miller both scored two goals in this game.

Update: AW defeated Southview 3-0 to advance to the finals where they will meet Maumee, who defeated Lake to reach the finals.  The game will be played at 11:00 AM February 10 at Tam-O.  Please come out to support the team!

Perrysbury defeated Ottawa Hills 6-2 in a preliminary round to advance , where they then fell to the Generals 3-1.
Anthony Wayne takes on  Southview Saturday February 9, 9:30 PM at Tam-O-Shanter.  Maumee plays Lake at 7:30 preceding the General's game.

AW Hockey Fund Raiser
A breakfast at Shawn’s Irish Tavern in Waterville will be held Saturday, February 9 from 8:30-12. Tickets are $5 for the buffet. Drinks (Coffee, juice, etc.) are extra.  Team members will be on hand to bus the tables.  Tickets can be purchased from any team parent, and will be available at the door.  Click here to reach a ticket seller.

February 1: AW - Maumee Game to benefit Josie Langsdorf

Josie's daughters attend AW schools. She has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. We are trying to help raise money for her to achieve her bucket list. We will be having a silent auction, 50/50, and individual item drawings during the game.

The gate will open and the silent auctuion will start at 6:30 (game time 7:00) and will conclude at the end of the second period.

Support the team and Josie by attending this game.



AW Clinches National Conference White Division Championship


At this point in the season with a 10-0 record in league play,  the Generals have clinched the National Conference White Division Championship.

AW Icer to head to Washington DC
AW Forward Julia Phillips to be a Senate Page

Congratulations go out to Julia, who will spend the spring session in Washington working as a Senate page from Jan. 28 until June 7.  This means she will miss the conclusion of this year's hockey season.  Fortunately, she will be eligible to return for her Senior year.  Julia is featured in a Toledo Blade article that you can read here.

January 5: AW 2, Perrysburg 0
Tam-O 2: Chris Podbielniak held Perrsyburg scoreless for the second time this season in this game that honored all the seniors on the team.  Brandon Zielinski scored in the 1st period, and the score remained 1-0 until late in the game when Chris Miller scored on an empty net.

Thanks go out to Mrs. Hoelrich who was the winner of our 50/50 raffle at Saturday’s game, which she donated back to the hockey team.

Seniors were  honored in a pre-game ceremony.  Shown below with their parents, from left to right:

The crowd was entertained by the AW Pep Band, who played the AW Alma Matter at the conclusion of the game, while the team saluted the fans.

January 4: AW 5, Southview 2
BGSU Ice Arena: Chris Podbielniak held Southview to 2 goals on 22 shots.  Goal scoreres were Cal Johnson (2), Cole Breese, Rob Brubaker, and Brandon Zielinski.  Assists came from Sam Spencer (2), Cody Bowman, Chris Miller, and Brandon Zielinski (2).

Dec 29: AW 8, Whitmer 6

Nine goals were scored in the first period, but both teams tightened up the defense in the latter periods.   AW expanded their lead to two goals by the end of the 3rd period to take the win.  Brandon Zielinski had a had trick, and Cal Johnson had four assists.

Dec 28: AW 6, Clay 2
The AW Pep Band fired up the Generals as they went on to defeat Caly 6-2 in this NHC league game at the Huntington Center.  A series of games were played this day to raise money for  paralyzed former Clay hockey player Kyle Cannon.  This game was also recorded by BCSN.  The game is tentatively scheduled for replay on January 7 at 1:00 AM.  Set your DVR.


Kyle Cannon Benefit Game December 28 3:00 PM at the Huntington Center

Come and watch the Generals play Clay in a game to benefit paralyzed former Clay hockey player Kyle Cannon at the Huntington Center, home of the Walleye.  Tickets can be obtained from any AW hockey player or parent, as well as at the door.  Your ticket is also redeemable for a Walleye regular season game.  This is the 4th year the benefit will be held for Kyle.  Please help with this worthy cause by attending the game.
 


Generals Capture  Ottawa Park Winter Classic Crown

AW made it to the finals of this points based, round robin tournament, facing Southview.
During round robin play Southview captured 4 out of 5 points from AW (actual score 2-1), but in the final the Generals dominated the play,  winning the game 5 goals to 1.

AW Takes both Games Dec 14, 15

Dec. 14, Tam-O: AW defeated Southview 5-3.
Dec 15, Tam-O: AW defeated Ottawa Hills 10-0 in a mercy shortened game.  Ryan Raimonde and Alec Smith each played a period to record the shut-out.  Chris Podbielniak played center in this game and scored the 1st goal.


AW Splits Games Dec 8, 9
Dec. 8, Adrian MI: AW 2, Mt. Clemens Prep 4.  The Generals played well but fell to Mt. Clemens, whose 4th goal was on an empty net.  Alec Smith and Chris Podbielniak split the game in net.  Cal Johnson and Rob Brubaker scored for AW.

Dec. 9, Fremont: AW 12, Fremont Ross 0 in a mercy shortened game.  Ryan Raimonde played the first period in goal, shutting out the Little Giants.

AW Defeats Lake 7-4
The Lake Flyers made a good showing in this game that benefitted Toys for Tots.  AW Goals were scored by Mike McDougall, Chris Miller (2), Cal Johnson, Harrison Pawliski, Brandon Zielinski, and Austin Pennell. Cody Bowman contributed an assist.  Chris Podbielniak recorded the win in net.

AW Opens 2012-2013 NHC season with win over Perrysburg

AW put up 5 goals to none for Perrysburg in a NHC White division contest on November 30.  Goal scorers were Mike McDougall, Chris Miller, Harrison Pawliski, Brandon Zielinski, and Julia Phillips.  Assists came from Cal Johnson (3), Cody Bowman, Chris Miller, Austin Pennell, and Brandon Zielinski.  Chris Podbielniak made 26 saves on 26 shots to record the shut-out.

Thanksgiving Tournament Results
The Generals traveled to Columbus for a Thanksgiving weekend tournament.  AW split their games with two wins and two losses.  The weekend was capped off with a victory over Dublin Scioto.  In a curfew shortened game, AW outscored their opponent 9-0.  Goals were scored as follows:

2012-2013 Season Changes

White and Blue Divisions Combine, Bedford moves up to Red

The White Division will consist of AW, Fremont Ross, Clay, Lake, Maumee, Ottawa Hills, Perrysburg, Springfield, Sylvania Southview, and Whitmer.

Jeri Hoellrich, AW High School Principal, assumes the role of President of the NHC
In what can only be seen as a positive note for AW Hockey, Jeri Hoellrich will be the Northwest Hockey Conference President for the 2012-2013 season.  Thanks go out to Ms. Hoellrich for taking on this responsibility.



Tam-O July tournament Results


AW Hockey started out the 2012-2013 season with mixed results.  The Generals were soundly defeated by Findlay and St. Johns, but rallied back to tie Northview and then pound Springfield 11-1.  The weekend saw the return of Chris Aubry to the team.  Two new members made their debut - goalie Alec Smith who played with Lake last season, and Austin
Pennell, a sophomore who played with Honey Baked in the AAA Little Caesar's league last year.  The AW Hockey family welcomes them to the fold, and we look forward to a great season with these new and returning players.

Coaching Change Announcement

Troy Boze named Head Coach

Troy Boze replaces Derek Helmke as AW Hockey Head Coach.   Steve Boehme again will be assistant coach.  New to the coaching staff this year is Ted Tucker. Ted was goalie for the Toledo Goaldiggers in the 1970's when they won the Riley Cup with the likes of Paul Tantardini, Ian McPhee and others. 
The coaching staff is looking forward to working with the players and having an exciting and successful year!
