December 4, 2009 Team Toledo Ice House

In fact there was no scoring until Whitmer's Cody Rutkowski scored at 11:33 of the 1st period on assists from Devin Crosser and T. Cormany to take the lead. Senior Goal Tender Trent DeLong stopped 14 of 15 Whitmer shots to earn his third win of the year.

The game was marred by 21 penalties with Whitmer taking 13 trying to keep up with the faster Generals. The game marked the return of AW to the White Division after several years when their only season in the division was a winless effort. AW is now 4 -1 on the season and 1 - 0 in the NHC White.

The Panthers hustled with great energy which is a tribute to their first year Head Coach Mark Waddel.

AW Icers Playing Key Roles in Fall Sports
(UPDATED 10-28)

Senior Rob Witte and Juniors Zach Ulrich and Michael Witte are participating on the Anthony Wayne Varsity Soccer Team. The soccer team looks to continue on a Final Four appearence last season and the hockey players look to help guide the kickers to more success in 2009. Zach has scored several goals as a Forward and Rob plays a solid defense for the Generals Soccer team. Rob is also one of few on the team who rarely comes out for a rest during the 80 minute games. Michael, after playing soccer in England during the 2009 summer vacation, is seeing his first varsity action this year.

The Generals beat Perrysburg 2 to 1 in an overtime shoot-out in the Second round of the State Tournament on Tuesday October 27th in Findlay. BG Sentinel-Tribune Perrysburg Game Article

State Soccer Tournament Brackets

AW finished 11th in the OHSAA State Championships on the Ohio State University's Scarlett Course. Senior Kevin Hoyle particpated for the Generals.

Incoming Freshmen Cal Johnson and Chad Bialecki are teammates on the Generals' Freshmen football team. Cal scored a touchdown on a 60 pass reception and run as the Freshman beat Maumee 24 to 21 on Thursday September 24th. Johnson made his first varsity game appearance in AW's final game of the year against Springfield October 30th. He played wide receiver late in the 4th quarter.

Finally there is the 6' 2" 200 lb+ Senior Left Wing Andrew Price a first year member of the Cross Country team. Now a lot of former Generals football lineman don't run 5,000 meters (3.13) miles) competitively. Andrew is competing hard and his times are improving, but most importantly, he has lost a few pounds and is down just under the 200 lb mark. It seems like a lot of work to avoid running "the hill" Andrew!

Meet Senior - Kevin Hoyle
*Kevin Hoyle is a Senior at AW. Although he played on the Jr. Generals teams for 3 years and particpated in numerous summer tourneys, he has never played for the Generals hockey team during the regular season. Last year, Kevin Played for the Canton Crush who were a National Semi-finalist in the U-16 Tier II tournament. Kevin scored the tieing goal for the Crush who would lose the semi-final game to the Afton (MO) Americans 3-2 in overtime. Hoyle led the Crush in the tournament with 4 goals and 6 assists in 5 games. Kevin would certainly be a valuble addition to AW's 2009-10 team,

Tier 2 Jr. Generals Tie Springfield 7 to 7....Or did they?
At the end of the game the scoreboard read 7 to 7, but the actual score would have been 8 to 7 Springfield without a score keeping error. But the uncertainty aside, it was the "Attack of the 6th Graders" which propelled the Jr. Generals into the apparent tie game. The line of 6th graders Zander Homer, Derek Dohanas and Nolan Ulchic scored 4 times while 7th grader John Ausec and 8th graders Chris Miller and Chad Bialecki each tallied once in a high scoring shootout. 6th grade Goalie Ryan Raimonde stood well above his sub 5 foot height and fought with the much older Blue Devils. His assists were the first points ever scored by an Anthony Wayne player in the annual senior all star game.

Zach Ulrich scored 2 goals for the Generals who ended their season with 21 wins 8 losses and a ties. Zak Seipel ended his outstanding career with a goal and an assist.

Seipel established the following School Records:
Goals Scored - Season 53 - (Old Record Chris Mathews 51)
Points Scored - Season 106 (Old Record Mathews 99)
Goals Scored - Career 123 (Old Record Mathews 114)

Mathews still holds the career Points Scored total of 240 just ahead of Seipel's 237.

It is unlikely, with the much more difficult schedules the Generals will play in future years, that these records, by these two wonderful players, will ever be matched. Koralewski and Seipel Voted to Play in the 2009 Senior All Star Game
The 2009 senior all-star game will be held at Nationwide arena as part of the 2009 final four weekend. The game will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday March 14th. The Generals Goal Tender Dan Koralewski and Forward Zak Seipel were chosen to play in the game by the state's High School Hockey Coaches.

Koralewski had a record year in the net for the Generals. Appearing in 25 games he set team records for wins, save percentage and goals allowed per game. He was acknowledged as one of the top goal tenders in the state. In the NHC Blue Division despite winning 5 of 6 games he played and a goals per game allowed average of 1.56, he was ignored by the other coaches and was not elected to the All Division first or second team. His election by the state's coaches reflects his true value to his team.

Zak Seipel broke the career record for goals scored (123) and season's records for goals (53) and points scored (106) in his truely remarkable 4 years as a General. He was the NHC Blue Division Player of the Year his last three seasons and Second Team All League his freshman year. There has never been a more dominating player in the NHC Blue Division. Zak's older brother Nick played on the first AW hockey team.

Dan and Zak were among 15 NHC players to be selected and were the only two from the Blue Division.

JV's Tie with St. John's 3 to 3

Kaptur then deflected a Nick Zielinski shot to draw the Generals within a goal. Aaron Podbielniak also assised on the goal. Late in the third period Kaptur waited patiently behind the Titan's net and hurled a pass towards Chris Watkins and it deflected off his knee into the net for the tieing goal.

In the final two periods the Generals dominated the play and out shot St. John's by 24 to 12 margin. The victory marked the first time the AW JV's had won a season's series against any league opponent, a distinction the Titans may find hard to accept.

It took the State's top rated soccer team to eliminate the Anthony Wayne Generals in the semi final round of the OHSSA tournament. St Ignatius scored the first goals against the Generals in the state tourney and went on to record a 2 to 0 win. The heart breaking loss ended the Generals unbeaten streak of more than 20 games. Zach Tansel, Zach Ulrich and Rob Witte will be joining the Generals' hockey team over the next few days as the first official practices begin November 7th. The confidence and attitude necessary to attain such a high level of achievement by these three players will be great examples for the 2009-09 Generals Hockey Team to emulate.

Zach Tansel and Robert Witte helped AW's highly state ranked Soccer team to a 3 to 0 victory over St. John's in the District Semi-final at Southview. Tansel started and played the whole game showing his steady and forceful defensive style of play. Both players helped as the Generals stifled the Titans offense that withered in intensity as the game progressed.

Fall Sports Info
Seven Generals Hockey Players have experienced success on the AW Fall Sports Teams. Five are members of the Soccer Teams, a Football player and a member of the Golf Team.

Senior Zach Tansel is described by Varsity Soccer Coach Chip Smith as "a key contributor" as a Defensive Back for the Generals who are in the Top 10 of the Division 1 State Rankings. Zach was a First Team All Blue Division Defenseman in 2007-08 for the Hockey Generals. Junior Robert Witte, who is recovering from an ankle injury, is a key reserve for the Varsity Soccer Team. He expects to return to action in the second round of the state tournament. Sophomore Zach Ulrich played Forward on Junior Varsity until being moved up to the Varsity. Zach scored a goal for the Generals in the State First Round Game against Waite. Sophomore Michael Witte was another member of the Junior Varsity Soccer Team as a Outside Middle Forward. Michael was one of the JV's leading scorers this season. Finally Sophomore Chloe Spencer, the Second Team All NHC Blue Division Goal Tender, played Goalie (What else!) for the Generals Girls Junior Varsity Soccer Team. The team went 8-2-2 during the 2008 season and Chloe was in the net for every game.

Sophomore Center/Wing John Vollmar was a member of the Generals Football Squad. John, a defensive lineman, dressed for the Varsity games and played in two games. He was a regular in the middle of the JV's defensive line and returned an interception for a touchdown. We understand that John has "trimmed down" to 185 pounds and is in great condition.

Last, but not least, Sophomore Trevor Pieh was a member of the NLL Champion Generals Junior Varsity Golf Team. He carded an excellent season long average in the low forties for nine holes.

Generals' Hockey Misc Notes:
The first Varsity Scrimmage is coming up fast against Clay on Sunday November 9th at 4:00 PM. The scrimmage will be at the Team Toledo Ice House on Alexis Road. Clay is expected to be a serious contender for the White Division Championship this season.

Captains' practices continue on Mondays and Wednesdays and we have seen several new faces for the upcoming season. Goaltender and 2-time Letterman Senior Dan Koralewsi returns after backstopping the National Tournament participants Toledo Cherokee (U-16) last season. His teammate last season, and a 3 year Jr. General, Sophomore Forward Zach Ulrich begins his first AW season. He is currently playing on the Generals' Soccer Team. Senior F/D Adam Ankenbrandt who has played 2 years as a Jr. General and also previously spent time as Varsity and Jr. Varsity player for the Generals rejoins the 2008-09 team.

Sophomore and 3 year Jr. General Forward Chris Watkins joins the team after playing for the Monroe Jr. Ice Hawks last season. Sophomore and 2 Year Jr. General Trevor Pieh starts with the team after playing basketball last winter. Freshman Forward Aaron Podbielniak, a former Maple Leaf and Cherokee travel team member joins former Maple Leaf Travel Team player Matt Trautlein who can play Forward, Defense and can also play Goalie. Finally, Freshman and 3 year Jr. General F/D Michael Kaptur who has had Travel experiences for the Maple Leafs and BG Youth Hockey should add plenty of spark to the Generals.

This group will be added to at least 21 returning players from last year's Varsity and JV Teams. Additionally, the players, who will play this season, have accumulated over 80 years of Jr. Generals playing experience. There is more...it is expected that at least 13 Jr. Generals 8th graders will be ready to play for AW next season.
